Wrangell St. Elias National ParkWrangell St. Elias National Park is the largest national park in the U.S. (13.2 million acres) and is part of one of the largest protected areas in the world. Four major mountain ranges can be found here; the Chugach, St. Elias, Alaska and Wrangells, containing six of North America's highest peaks. Our destination within the park is the old copper mining towns of McCarthy and Kennicott. The Kennecott mines (different spelling) were developed starting in 1907 and were, for awhile, the most productive copper mines in the U.S. Today they remain as a national historic landmark and an excellent example of early 20th century Alaskan history. We camp two nights near the Kennicott River at the end of unpaved McCarthy Road. Located nearby are the Kennicott and Root glaciers as well as the Stairway Icefall. We spend a full day taking advantage of the variety of activities available. HikingThe hike along the side of Kennicott glacier is the most popular and provides great views of the glacier and Stairway Icefall. Or get dropped off by plane for a more remote hiking experience. Glacier HikingThis is an outstanding place to hike on a glacier on a guided glacier hike. Ice ClimbingWant a more challenging glacier experience? Several local guiding services specialize in ice climbing from beginning to expert. Flight SeeingExperience the impressive local mountains and glaciers from a birds eye view. Kennecott Copper Mine ToursTake an interpretive tour through the impressive historic buildings of Kennicott and relive early Alaskan history.
